Tomorrow

Firstly - good news: you don't have to do any reading for tomorrow :)

I know that you're writing dozens of tests these days, so I'm not going to add to the load you have already.

I'm almost done with summing up all the points your groups have scored this semester. I will have the numbers ready for tomorrow.

In the class we'll tackle the letter "K" or jump straight to "L" depending on projector availability. Anyway, there will be something interesting and maybe even a yummy surprise, so please make sure you come.

See ya :)

I & J: Indigenous art, Islands and Jeopardy

*

1. As promised we're returning briefly to Indigenous Australians and their culture.

The pictures will take you to related readings.

Architecture

Art

Ceremony: song, music & dance

Tools and technology

We are going to see some complimentary materials, but I'll not be asking any detailed questions on that topic.

2. Another reading I'd like you to do on your own concerns Australian islands.

Click on the picture to learn more.

Again, it's virtually impossible to discuss all Australian islands, so we will focus on just three which are related to other topics whe have covered and will cover in the future: Norfolk, Rottnest and Torres Strait Islands.

3. The bulk of our class, though, will be devoted to the letter "J". It stands for Jeopardy ;-)

Australia is a dangerous place to stay alive ;-)

Watch the clip by our old friends The Scared Weird Little Guys and try to note down as many threats that await you in Australia as you can.

Being precautious tourists, you may also want to find out how to protect yourselves and what to do if you get bitten or stung.

Temperatures get off the scale...

Talk about extreme climate...

The Bureau of Meteorology's interactive weather forecasting chart has added new colours – deep purple and pink – to extend its previous temperature range that had been capped at 50 degrees.

Heatwave

Australia is preparing for a "perfect heatwave" - the hottest one since 2001.

We already talked about some hazards connected with wild Australian climate and you designed some warning signs. Here is another iconographic:

And you can read more HERE.

And today it's getting hotter....

H: Hobart, History, High culture, Humour and generally "How to be Australian"

Just three topic this time, because one is bound to take us a lot of time ;-)

TIMELINE

You can have a look at the timeline above as we're going to start with a short overview of the part of Australian history that we've covered so far.

But most of what we'll be talking about is still somehow linked to Tasmania - Van Diemen's Land. So click on the clip below and let's go to Tassie ;)

1. Hobart - two clips from one of my favourite You Tube travel channels - Overlander:

2. High Culture

HARBOUR BRIDGE

and

3. Humour:
- gallows humour
- anti-authoritarian
- self-depreciating

I LOVE this article! Have fun!

Tasmania bushfires

One of topics in our next class is Hobart - the capital of Tasmania. The island state has been weathering serious bushfires in recent days. Luckily no lives have been lost so far.

Some other regions, most notably Victoria and SA, are suffering a heatwave. Teperatures are reaching above 40C.
